Kindergarten Word List
Our kindergarten word list consists of words that are commonly found in reading and writing. In class we call these words ‘popcorn words’ as they pop up in everything we read and write. These are words that we all must be able to read automatically in order to be strong readers. The goal is that by the end of the year children are able to read all the words without having to stop and think.
Depending a child’s learning style there are many ways to practice these words. We tap the words out on our arms. Your child can teach you this practice. Children may enjoy writing the words in sand, shaving cream, paint or other tactile mediums and then reading the words. Colorful flash cards are helpful for some learners. Practice, practice, practice is a must!

Kindergarten Invented Spelling
In kindergarten we work tremendously hard to instill independence in our students. Invented spelling allows for independence as children develop writing and reading skills.
As children spell using invented spelling they say words slowly, stretching out the sounds and write down the dominant sounds they hear. Gaining experience with this process fine tunes childrens’ ability to both say and hear sounds. When students are independent in the practice of using invented spelling they are on their way to becoming prolific kindergarten writers. There is nothing more magical then when a student reads their own writing.
